EPA seeks to mitigate the risks and threats posed by the use of wastewater for irrigation purposes by introducing the concept of integrated wastewater management starting with planning for safe wastewater collection and disposal including the potential use of treated wastewater in agriculture, taking into account the social/cultural acceptance of reuse, as well as the absence of a reliable energy source. The focus is on building the capacity of sanitation workers on anaerobic wastewater treatment technologies which are very suitable for the Syrian context and effective in decentralized treatment.
